Salem, Massachusetts, home of witchcraft hysteria.

I was lucky enough to spend a few hours visiting Salem while in Boston for a conference this time last year.  Along with the beautiful fall leaves and crisp air, the Halloween season was in full swing!

There is plenty to do and see while visiting Salem, especially in October during Haunted Happenings. They offer a full calendar of events providing everything from haunted tours to psychics even wine and mead tasting.

You’ll also find a number of Salem staples open year round: the House of Seven Gables, the Salem Witch Museum, the Witch History Museum, and Salem’s Only Monster Museum to name a few. The town also pays tribute to one of pop culture’s most famous witches, Samantha from Bewitched.

If metaphysics and the occult is your thing, be sure to check out the Psychic Fair and Witchcraft Expo. You’ll find magical gifts and get to talk with practicing witches. If you’re not there in October, be sure to visit Hex Old World Witchery shop. Here you’ll find all things magical; candles, amulets, spell kits, etc.

Food, no visit is complete without food! Salem has a number of quaint restaurants to choose from. If steak is your favorite, check out 43 Church. If Italian is more your style, you have a cornucopia of options from Bella Verona Ristorante, Caffe Graziani, and Great Escape Restaurant (who wouldn’t want to eat in a 200 year old jail?).  And don’t forget desert! Be sure to visit Ye Olde Pepper Companie, the oldest candy shop in the states.

Salem truly plays up its witch history, even the high school mascot is a witch! Though I was only able to visit for a few hours, I got to experience a bit of history. Looking forward to my next adventure in Salem, for at least a weekend!
