Travel Insurance | Ingenious TravelMany travelers are often on the fence on whether or not it is a good idea to pay for travel insurance. One thing is for sure, it is always best to be prepared and ready rather than regretful and sorry when the unthinkable happens. However, the answer to the question of whether or not to get insurance for your next trip may not always be a YES!

Here are some helpful hints to guide you in making your final decision:

First, it pays to review all of your existing insurance policies. Check t and determine if any of these offer coverage for medical emergencies overseas or even away from your own state or province. This is especially important if you have a pre-existing medical condition or if you are simply worried about getting sick while you are on the road. If you are paying for a superior medical insurance package, it is most likely going to be good news for you.

Second, inquire about the perks offered by your credit card company especially when you are a gold (or equivalent) credit card holder. You may be entitled to first-class travel bonuses if you make use of your credit card to purchase airline tickets, hotel bookings and tour reservations for your trip abroad. Call your card’s customer service department and inquire if you are insured against baggage loss, medical emergencies, evacuation, and accidental death and dismemberment, among others.

Laptop Travel |Ingenious TravelBefore anything else, you should know that a laptop is not a good travel companion. Unless you are going on a business trip that requires the the use of your laptop, it is best left at home if you do not want to risk losing or damaging it while you are on the road.

It will also significantly slow you down and will ultimately prove to be much more of a nuisance than helpful in the long run. However, if you really must travel with a laptop, here are some helpful tips to make traveling with it as pleasant as possible.

Your laptop should always be in your carry on bag. Do not even attempt checking it in with the rest of your luggage if you still want to see it in good working condition after your flight. Make sure to protect your device with a laptop sleeve before putting it in a bag or a case of your choice. The laptop sleeves will protect it from bumps and knocks that are unavoidable when traveling. Also, do not forget to put your name, contact number and address inside your laptop bag or better yet, stick it on the device – just in case you lose it and someone gracious gets to find it and attempt to find the owner. It is also good practice to have a copy of your computer’s serial number, just so you can make a good case in the event you find it resting on someone else’s lap.

Pack Light | Ingenious TravelPack light! This is the mantra every traveler must adhere with.

However, some things are just worth the space and added weight in your baggage. True, these extras are not necessary and can be easily dispensed with but they help make travel a lot easier and more enjoyable. Here are some useful extras you may find worth packing with your travel essentials.

Wet Wipes
You will not mind the lack of soap and water while you are on the road if you carry a pack with you and there is just so much you can do with them. Wiping off dirty surfaces is just one of the many uses. You can also use them to freshen up and cool down by patting it on your face, your temple and your neck. After you have traveled with a pack of wet wipes, you will not think twice about bringing some with you anywhere you go.

Window Cleaner
You may raise your eyebrow on this one but if you are an avid photographer you will surely utter a heartfelt prayer of thanks if you have brought along a small bottle of window cleaner with you when a dirty window gets in the way of a stunning landscape shot while you are traveling on a train or a bus.

Pre-departure checklist | Ingenious TravelOK, you’ve made your holiday plans. You’re ready to pack. Let’s look at a pre-departure checklist for things other than clothes.

The very first thing to check is your passport. If you’re traveling out of your home country, is it current? Did you get any visas that are necessary? This is your responsibility whether you are on your own or on a tour. Make copies of your passport to take with you and to leave with relatives or friends.

It never hurts to check to see if there are any travel advisories for the countries you will be visiting. (Many governments issue travel advisories… check with your own government and another one or two for a rounded view.)

You should be up to date on any vaccinations that are recommended or required.

Packing suitcaseKeeping your clothes wrinkle-free is close to impossible when traveling. In fact, your problem starts from the moment the clothes are placed inside your bag. Keeping your clothes wrinkle-free may be impossible, however there are several things you can do to minimize it. The following tips will allow you to keep your clothes ready to wear when you get to your destination.

Overloading your luggage is one of the main culprits of wrinkles in clothing. When your luggage is jam-packed full of so many things, expect to find them crushed to the point of being unwearable. You can always take advantage of the hotel pressing service but those services don’t come cheap and the cost can take a big bite out of your vacation budget So, to avoid squashing your clothes, pack only enough that will allow your clothes to breathe while you travel.

How you fold your clothes also contributes to keeping wrinkling at a minimum. Rolling is best for t-shirts and jeans. It is also an effective way to maximize your luggage space. For jeans, fold them lengthwise first then start rolling from the cuff up. Same goes with t-shirts, fold the arms first then fold the shirt lengthwise and roll starting from the bottom. However, rolling is not recommended for sweaters because of their bulk; so, you can just fold them the way you always do at home.

Food Allergies | Ingenious TravelThere is nothing that can ruin a great trip more than a nasty food allergy attack. You will end up holed up in your hotel room waiting for the symptoms to subside and all the while wasting precious time watching old reruns on TV or, worse, in self-pity. To avoid this unwanted experience, you cannot be too careful in what you munch while you are out there enjoying the sights. So, here are a few tips you might want to consider to keep healthy when traveling with food allergies.

If you are going in a place that does not speak your language, you want to learn the exact translation of your food allergens in the local lingo. If articulation is a problem, write it down and just learn to speak the local term for “no” and “allergy”. When you are in a restaurant ordering your meal, just show them the word and say no because you are allergic to them. Your waiter will usually get your drift but if you think he is having trouble understanding, request to speak with someone who can understand you.

7 Ways to Stay Healthy While TravelingMany people travel over the holiday season. As this is also known as the season for colds and flu, it’s important to be proactive when encountering germs. Here are seven tips to help you stay healthy while traveling this holiday season.

1. Wash Your Hands
The most important step we can take in staying healthy is keeping your hands clean and keeping them away from your eyes, nose, and mouth. You touch dozens of germy surfaces every day, when you travel, multiply that by 1,000. If you aren’t sure you will have access to soap and water, carry antibacterial wipes and/or hand sanitizer. Wiping down surfaces before using them can also help in reducing the number of germs you come in contact with.

2. Drink Plenty of Water
Flying can be dehydrating due to the altitude change and dry air. You’ve heard it, drink a minimum of 64 oz. of water a day; however you need more when flying. Many people also like to celebrate the beginning of their trip with a glass of wine or cocktail when flying. Wait until you’re on the ground to indulge as alcohol (and caffeine) is also dehydrating and can cause jet lag.

Airplane Seats | Ingenious TravelThere is an excess of in-flight horror stories these days. You probably have experienced an intoxicated person a few rows back who doesn’t stop whining at the top of his lungs, or a baby who doesn’t stop crying, or the classic case of an overeager seatmate who goes on and on and on with the story of his/her life. However, more than these out-and-out exasperating situations, there are still numerous other instances that may not be as apparent but are still prevalent causes of stress to the hapless victim.

One of the major stressed during a flight can be traced to unwelcome intrusions of personal space. However, this problem cannot be entirely avoided considering that numerous individuals share a very small piece of real estate during a flight, and it seems to be getting smaller (see recent USA Today article).  The best that one can do is to minimize the occurrence and take the edge off of such intrusion as much as possible.

Since you will be sitting really close to others during a flight, you should pay attention to hygiene. If you have a very early flight the next day, you may want to wake up early to shower or at least take a shower the night before your flight. If you happen to be sitting beside one whose smell is just plain offensive, do not make snide remarks if you do not want to engage in a nasty fight. You may be better off approaching a flight attendant and request to be seated elsewhere.
