“There is no friend as loyal as a book.”

We’d have to agree with Ernest Hemingway. Whether you consider yourself a bibliophile or just a casual reader, a good book is an essential part of travel. Ranging from the iconic to the strange and stunningly beautiful, these are bookstores around the world are perfect vacation ideas you don’t want to miss.

Dude Ranch | Ingenious Travel

A Dude Ranch is a perfect vacation option, especially for traveling with a group of friends and/or family. It’s the original Western vacation that’s gaining more popularity in today’s world. The concept of the Dude Ranch began around the early 19th century when ranch owners started hosting guests from the Midwest and East Coast to experience the ranching lifestyle. Ranches are not only cozy, but they have a more ‘home away from home’ kind of appeal.

Three reasons why a dude ranch vacation is perfect for groups:

Visit any time of year

Most dude ranches operate year round and offer a variety of seasonal activities. This allows you to travel on your schedule.

For now, Morocco remains relatively untouched by mass tourism, however there are some spots on the tourist map that are particularly well served for visitors.

Agadir | Morocco | Ingenious Travel

Agadir: Morocco’s Number 1 Tourist Area

Situated towards the south of Morocco on the Atlantic coast, Agadir boasts 9 Km of superb white sandy beach and all the amenities of a modern seaside resort.

Agadir boasts 300 days of hot sunshine, which is also especially prominent in winter months.  Here you can find many five-star hotels and a huge supply of hotel beds, reputedly a quarter of the total in Morocco.

Initially, there seems little sign of the rich history and tradition to be found in other Moroccan cities, although if you search it out, you will find it within the depths of the town.  This is largely due to an unprecedented earthquake that shook Agadir in 1961.  It has now been re-modelled as a popular package holiday destination, as well as a major fishing port.

Once dubbed the Miami of Morocco, Agadir offers a wide range of activities – along the beach, camel rides, parascending, scooters and speed boats, as well as horse riding, tennis and an 18-hole golf course.

Santiago Chile | Ingenious Travel

Santiago

Santiago is the capital of this majestic country and it certainly doesn’t lack character. As the largest city in Chile, you will find that it is favored by residents and tourists for many reasons. Each neighborhood nestled within the city’s borders is distinctly different from the next. For instance, as you enter Bellavista, you are introduced to historical European homes and a free spirited energy that you simply can’t ignore. With colorful buildings, marketplaces and street art around nearly every corner, your eyes could wonder each crevice and still find new details while your ears get to hear the pleasant sounds of live music fill the air.

If you’re into encounters of the spine-tingling variety, you’re part of a small but passionate group of travelers. “Paranormal Travel” enthusiasts participate regularly in online forums, and there’s even a small cottage industry that specializes in highlighting travel to spooky (we mean haunted) destinations. If this interests you or someone you know, here’s a quick list of some of the world’s reportedly most haunted places.

Castle of Good Hope, Capetown, South Africa. This place has some of the standard ghosts — a man who reportedly walks the ramparts, and a crying woman whose haunting ceased when her body was discovered in later excavations. But this castle also claims a supernatural canine that jumps up on guests as they walk the halls. Down, Fido!

Since we are staying home, and most schools are closed as well, I thought it might be a help to recommend some of my favorite travel-themed movies that you can easily find on the many streaming services that are out there. What better way to spend a couple of hours with your family than watching together, dreaming together, and getting inspiration for your next trip?

  1.  Eat, Pray, Love (2010) – A married woman realizes how unhappy her marriage really is, and that her life needs to go in a different direction. After a painful divorce, she takes off on a round-the-world journey to “find herself” in Italy, India & Bali.
  2. Under the Tuscan Sun (2003) – Based on the book by Frances Mayes, the film is about a recently divorced writer who buys a villa in Tuscany on a whim, hoping it will lead to a change in her life. The beauty of Cortona and the Italian people are featured.
  3. Letters to Juliet (2010)traveling to Verona Italy with her busy fiancé, a young American journalist gets involved in an adventure based on a love letter a tourist left at the monument to Romeo & Juliet’s unrequited love.
  4. Mamma Mia (2008) & Mamma Mia: Here we go again (2018) – based on the wildly successful Broadway musical with a score from ABBA, this story tracks the lovely story of Donna and her daughter Sophie as they both grow and learn from the past.
  5. National Lampoon’s European Vacation (1985)  – Just for giggles, follow the Griswold family through their comedic adventures in France, Italy & Germany because we all need a laugh right now!
  6. Out of Africa (1985)  – Meryl Streep and Robert Redford star in this tragic love story about a married baroness who falls for a big-game hunter, based on the autobiographical novel by Isak Dinesen. Filmed on location in the U.K. and Kenya, including the Shaba National Game Reserve.
  7. Roman Holiday (1953)  – A bored and sheltered princess escapes her guardians and royal obligations to explore Rome on her own. She meets an American newsman who, seeking an exclusive story, pretends ignorance of her true dientity. But his plan fails as they fall in love.

For some travelers, the idea of exploring the world alone sounds invigorating. For others, it sounds lonely. But, it doesn’t have to be! If you’re without a match in 2020, this year might just be the perfect time to head to Ireland. Below are some tips for enjoying a visit to the country even if you’re single.

Bring a Family Member

So you don’t have a significant other. That’s okay. Odds are you’ve got someone in your family who would love to get out of dodge with you! What better way to deepen emotional bonds than by doing something relaxing and rejuvenating like visiting the Emerald Isle?

Make it a Girl’s (or Guy’s) Trip

Friends are the family you choose, and going with them can be one of the best ways to have fun on vacation. In fact, this is true even if you are already coupled up! There’s nothing quite like learning about new cultures and traditions with your closest friends by your side. It takes all the pressure off, and allows you to focus on what you really want out of your trip.

The Christmas spirit is still embraced in many cities, towns and villages throughout Europe, where many Christmas Markets can be traced back to the Middle Ages. Their streets are lined with lights, décor, and all sorts of local, unique, seasonal items. Let these cities transport you to a Christmas wonderland!

Three Christmas Markets to Consider

Nuremberg, Germany

You don’t want to miss the enticing aromas of mulled wine, irresistible pretzels, and traditional gingerbread. While there be sure to climb the stairs of the Church of Our Lady and get a wonderful view of the lights, the stalls, and the amazing Christmas themed decorations. (November 29 – December 24)

Oktoberfest | Ingenious Travel

Imagine a two to three week festival dedicated to beer and traveling funfair. Not only does it exist, Oktoberfest happens every year in Munich, Bavaria, Germany! In fact, this annual festival has been held since the year 1810, and even though several celebrations exist worldwide, the one in Germany was the first, and is still the biggest.

When to Visit Oktoberfest

The best time to visit Oktoberfest is generally in September. Yep, this beer fueled event actually kicks off before October officially arrives. The weekdays of the event are the quietest, and understandably so the weekends are the busiest. For full details of the best days to visit, click here.

Costs

While the grounds of the official Oktoberfest are free to enter, everything inside has a fee. From samples of beer to amusement park rides, luggage storage to special events – Oktoberfest can get expensive fast if you’re not keeping track of your budget. One liter of beer at Oktoberfest was nearly 12 Euro (roughly $13.50 USD) in 2018. Keep your eye out for specials. Also, consider going during the quieter times when vendors offer discounts to keep the beer tap flowing.

As a travel professional, I value great experiences. The moments spent in awe of a beautiful view, a priceless piece of art or the wonder and pure joy on the face of a child as they experience something new and exciting are worth far more than the price of admission.

We all have a limited amount of time and money, and we are often faced with the dilemma of what is the best way to spend – or to invest – both of those resources.

We can choose from an endless assortment of high-tech gadgets, sparkly things, and material luxuries that will impress our friends and family… for a short time at least. Children (and some adults) have lists of the gaming systems, toys, and fashion labels they want for their next birthday or holiday gift.

But once we’ve bought the latest smart phone or the expensive shoes, how long do they last? How long will they continue to bring joy? And how likely are they to be truly treasured by those around us after we are gone?
