Since we are staying home, and most schools are closed as well, I thought it might be a help to recommend some of my favorite travel-themed movies that you can easily find on the many streaming services that are out there. What better way to spend a couple of hours with your family than watching together, dreaming together, and getting inspiration for your next trip?

  1.  Eat, Pray, Love (2010) – A married woman realizes how unhappy her marriage really is, and that her life needs to go in a different direction. After a painful divorce, she takes off on a round-the-world journey to “find herself” in Italy, India & Bali.
  2. Under the Tuscan Sun (2003) – Based on the book by Frances Mayes, the film is about a recently divorced writer who buys a villa in Tuscany on a whim, hoping it will lead to a change in her life. The beauty of Cortona and the Italian people are featured.
  3. Letters to Juliet (2010)traveling to Verona Italy with her busy fiancé, a young American journalist gets involved in an adventure based on a love letter a tourist left at the monument to Romeo & Juliet’s unrequited love.
  4. Mamma Mia (2008) & Mamma Mia: Here we go again (2018) – based on the wildly successful Broadway musical with a score from ABBA, this story tracks the lovely story of Donna and her daughter Sophie as they both grow and learn from the past.
  5. National Lampoon’s European Vacation (1985)  – Just for giggles, follow the Griswold family through their comedic adventures in France, Italy & Germany because we all need a laugh right now!
  6. Out of Africa (1985)  – Meryl Streep and Robert Redford star in this tragic love story about a married baroness who falls for a big-game hunter, based on the autobiographical novel by Isak Dinesen. Filmed on location in the U.K. and Kenya, including the Shaba National Game Reserve.
  7. Roman Holiday (1953)  – A bored and sheltered princess escapes her guardians and royal obligations to explore Rome on her own. She meets an American newsman who, seeking an exclusive story, pretends ignorance of her true dientity. But his plan fails as they fall in love.

For some travelers, the idea of exploring the world alone sounds invigorating. For others, it sounds lonely. But, it doesn’t have to be! If you’re without a match in 2020, this year might just be the perfect time to head to Ireland. Below are some tips for enjoying a visit to the country even if you’re single.

Bring a Family Member

So you don’t have a significant other. That’s okay. Odds are you’ve got someone in your family who would love to get out of dodge with you! What better way to deepen emotional bonds than by doing something relaxing and rejuvenating like visiting the Emerald Isle?

Make it a Girl’s (or Guy’s) Trip

Friends are the family you choose, and going with them can be one of the best ways to have fun on vacation. In fact, this is true even if you are already coupled up! There’s nothing quite like learning about new cultures and traditions with your closest friends by your side. It takes all the pressure off, and allows you to focus on what you really want out of your trip.

The Christmas spirit is still embraced in many cities, towns and villages throughout Europe, where many Christmas Markets can be traced back to the Middle Ages. Their streets are lined with lights, décor, and all sorts of local, unique, seasonal items. Let these cities transport you to a Christmas wonderland!

Three Christmas Markets to Consider

Nuremberg, Germany

You don’t want to miss the enticing aromas of mulled wine, irresistible pretzels, and traditional gingerbread. While there be sure to climb the stairs of the Church of Our Lady and get a wonderful view of the lights, the stalls, and the amazing Christmas themed decorations. (November 29 – December 24)

Oktoberfest | Ingenious Travel

Imagine a two to three week festival dedicated to beer and traveling funfair. Not only does it exist, Oktoberfest happens every year in Munich, Bavaria, Germany! In fact, this annual festival has been held since the year 1810, and even though several celebrations exist worldwide, the one in Germany was the first, and is still the biggest.

When to Visit Oktoberfest

The best time to visit Oktoberfest is generally in September. Yep, this beer fueled event actually kicks off before October officially arrives. The weekdays of the event are the quietest, and understandably so the weekends are the busiest. For full details of the best days to visit, click here.

Costs

While the grounds of the official Oktoberfest are free to enter, everything inside has a fee. From samples of beer to amusement park rides, luggage storage to special events – Oktoberfest can get expensive fast if you’re not keeping track of your budget. One liter of beer at Oktoberfest was nearly 12 Euro (roughly $13.50 USD) in 2018. Keep your eye out for specials. Also, consider going during the quieter times when vendors offer discounts to keep the beer tap flowing.

As a travel professional, I value great experiences. The moments spent in awe of a beautiful view, a priceless piece of art or the wonder and pure joy on the face of a child as they experience something new and exciting are worth far more than the price of admission.

We all have a limited amount of time and money, and we are often faced with the dilemma of what is the best way to spend – or to invest – both of those resources.

We can choose from an endless assortment of high-tech gadgets, sparkly things, and material luxuries that will impress our friends and family… for a short time at least. Children (and some adults) have lists of the gaming systems, toys, and fashion labels they want for their next birthday or holiday gift.

But once we’ve bought the latest smart phone or the expensive shoes, how long do they last? How long will they continue to bring joy? And how likely are they to be truly treasured by those around us after we are gone?

Travel is meant to transport you — to other places, obviously, but also sometimes to other times, other worlds, other possibilities. These four utterly incredible hotels are full of the magic, mystery, and wonder that travel embodies. These are places you might never want to leave!

The Taj Palace Resort, Lake Pichola, Rajasthan, India is for the person who’s ever wondered what it was like to see the world in the Golden Age of travel. This is the place (or palace) to get a glimpse of what it feels like to be royalty. Built in the middle of a lake, this huge marble resort features opulent 1930s rooms with intricately carved archways and rooms draped in sumptuous fabrics. You can dine al fresco with a view of the surrounding mountains and the warm lights of the shoreline, and then hop on a traditional sunset boat ride with your own personal oarsman.

Travel Profile | Ingenious Travel

There are, of course, thousands of possible trips out there. There are plenty of great trips to choose from — and then there are trips that are great for you. Being honest about what you want and need and getting to know your own personal travel profile can save you from the but-it-looked-great-on-paper trip disappointment.

Here are a few simple things that can help you better understand your unique and personal travel profile:

  1. Make a quick list of the twenty most fun memories you have of trips you’ve taken in your lifetime. Notice if there are any themes. While you don’t necessarily need (or even want) each vacation to be a carbon copy of things you’ve already done, you can use those larger themes to guide your planning of future trips. That way, if you decide to step out a little from your comfort zone, you’ll at least have a solid idea of what makes the most meaningful moments for you. Is it time with friends or family? A certain type of weather or geography? Certain activities? Quiet time? When you can build some of these elements into your travel, you’re more likely to come home energized and restored.

The Titanic is perhaps the most famous ship to ever sink. Movies and books have been written about it, and it truly changed the game in terms of what it takes for a cruise ship (or any ship ofr that matter) to be considered safe for the passengers aboard it. The city of Belfast in Northern Ireland is the city where this famous ship was built, and visiting it is one of the most educational, and eye-opening experiences one could have.

The Titanic Experience

Titanic Belfast is the world’s largest Titanic visitor experiences. This award winning visitor center offers nine interactive galleries by which to explore the Titanic. What makes New Zealand so popular to visit by way of rail or road trip? Perhaps it’s the fact that while riding along in a train on a railway or on the road in your own vehicle you can view the spectacular scenery. Or maybe it’s the fact that you’ll see more of the countryside because you’ll be constantly moving from place to place. Visiting this destination and touring it in this fashion is certainly something you’ll never forget.

By Rail

When touring by rail, you have several options for where you’ll visit. Just three of the options available to you include:

  1. Northern Explorer: This is the longest running passenger service between Auckland and Wellington. You’ll enjoy views of fertile farmland, volcanic peaks, and the sparkling waters of the Kapiti coast.
  2. TranzAlpine: This route is considered one of the world’s most scenic rail journeys, and will take you 139 miles through 16 tunnels and viaducts from Christchurch to Greymouth and back.
  3. Coastal Pacific: This rail journey will take you up the Kaikoura Coastline, which are famous for views of the marine mammals, and whale watching. Bring your camera and a zoom lens for awesome shots of dolphins, seals and penguins.
