In March 2020, Twentieth Century Fox is releasing the 55th anniversary of the classic hit movie, The Sound of Music. For those of you who don’t know, the film is set in Austria, and stars Julie Andrews who plays Maria. It’s based on the true story of the Von Trapp family of singers, and is a heartwarming tale about how music helps heal and bring a family together, even during the most devastating of times.

In celebration of the movie’s anniversary, we recommend heading to Salzburg to see the sights from the film. Watch or rewatch the movie on your flight over, and then visit all the stunning locations that were used as the filming locations or as inspiration for the scenes in the classic musical. The views you’ll enjoy will make you feel like you’re in the movie. We dare you not to hum or sing the most memorable tunes from the film as you tour the sights.

Love the Sound of Music as much as we do? Check out the 50th Anniversary Edition here.

Sing Do-Re-Mi at Mirabell Palace and Gardens

When the Von Trapp children sing “Do, Re, Mi” they are running and singing around the exquisite Mirabell Gardens. Dance around the statues, take a selfie at the gates, and stroll along The Hedge Tunnel.

Think About Your Favorite Things at Horse Bath

The Pferdeschwemme aka Horse Bath is where the children splash in the water to a musical interlude of the song “My Favorite Things.” Though the children first hear Maria sing this song while in bed as she tries to calm their fears from a storm, an instrumental version of the song is played here again later in the film.

Take in a Puppet Show at the Salzburg Marionette Theatre

The Salzburg Marionette Theatre inspired a scene in The Sound of Music movie where Maria and the children perform “Lonely Goatherd” with marionette puppets. Today, the local puppeteers perform full-length puppet shows of the Broadway Play for tourists to watch. Fun fact – Sound of Music was first a play on Broadway that had its inaugural performance on November 16, 1959, and the feature film based on the play was released on April 1, 1965.

(By now I’m sure you’ve got the songs playing in your head!)

Visit the Leopoldskron Palace

This was the original shooting location for the movie. In the film, it was portrayed as the home of the Von Trapp family. It is also called the birthplace of the Salzburg Festival. This breathtaking building has now been transformed into a hotel, and you can actually stay on the property.
